Out With the Old…

It’s been getting harder and harder to write lately. Mostly because I take care of my boys in our somewhat-kind-of-childproofed house. I say somewhat because my husband, the architect / arteeest ha specifically requested that some installations just cannot be moved / protected. This includes our heater / furnace, various outlets and wires, a large glass aquarium with sharp edges filled with smaller glass bottles amongst others. And despite mine, my mother’s, his mother’s and our friends insistence, we are still left with interesting safety challenges throughout our home.

I sometimes think that Javi is as hard-headded as I am. But that could not be true. I’m the most hard-headded person I know. I am amazed however, at how little he listens to me when it comes to the children’s safety.

Me (8 months ago): We need a gate to block off the kitchen from the kids. (x 2,449 times)
Me (7 months ago): We need a gate to block off the kitchen from the kids. They’re getting into our tupperware. (x 3,283 times)
Me (6 months ago): We need a gate to block off the kitchen from the kids. They’re pulling out our pots and pans. (x 199 times)
Me (5 months ago): We need a gate to block off the kitchen from the kids. They’re going to hurt themselves if they touch the oven. (x 104,500 times)
Me (4 months ago): We need to remove everything from the kitchen. (Mind you we have a more “open” kitchen – there are no cupboards).
Me (3 months ago): If we don’t get a gate to block the kitchen off, our kitchen will be destroyed.
Me (2 months ago): Let’s take a weekend and clean out the kitchen. Eliminate everything we don’t use and move all the dangerous stuff to other places. (Yah! we did it!)
Me (last month): They’re opening the drawers. We need a gate to block the kids off from the kitchen, or I’m going to buy those baby proofing objects that you hate and attach them to everything that opens in this kitchen (x 20)
Cause, last Sunday – guess who made a gate for our kitchen after me leaving him alone Saturday evening with the boys in the kitchen for an hour? Yep. Javi did! And it’s fantastic and works!

We also re-arranged the boys room a little bit.

And took out the 12ft. x 12ft. fenced in play area because the boys were escaping from it so much (it served its purpose). And we made our living room a giant play area.

And we removed all of our books from the bottom couple of shelves and made that into a toy storage area.

And invented a new sitting area (complete with fake grass).

And most importantly, my subliminal nagging skills have paid off because this weekend, we bought a new clothes washer. I’m waiting for delivery today. RIP old one. You lasted a long time, and you still make noises, but we all know you don’t clean clothes anymore.

old washing machine was so broken that we had to invent where to start and stop cycles
